Tyler Haynes Commons


Nestled in the heart of campus and located overlooking Westhampton Lake, the Tyler Haynes Commons offers a panoramic view to all who enter. The Commons provides an array of services to students, faculty, staff and guests. Housed in the Commons are the following Administrative Offices, Student Organization Offices, and facilities:

  • Activities/Programming Venue hosting a variety of programs such as feature films, dances, DJs, comedians, karaoke, live music, and guest speakers.
  • The Bookstore offers books, class supplies, stamps, University apparel, snack foods, gifts, cards and toiletries. Other services include film developing and FAX services for a nominal fee.
  • The Center for Civic Engagement helps students to connect their learning to the greater Richmond area and to civic and social issues.
  • The Cellar is our campus pub and restaurant. Open seven nights a week, serving specialty sandwiches, appetizers, pizza, and more. Entertainment is provided certain nights.
  • Common Ground seeks to make the UR campus a model of inclusive diversity.
  • There is a First Market Bank ATM located at the bottom of the center stairs next to the vending machines.
  • Freshëns is the campus 'Smoothie' bar.
  • The newly renovated Currents gameroom has comfortable couches and chairs, flat screen televisions for viewing and for playing video games, as well as tables to use for study or just sit and relax.
  • Meeting and conference rooms that are available for use are the Alice Haynes Room on the first floow and rooms 305, 310, 331, 346, and 348 on the third floor.
  • The Office of Multicultural Affairs is a resource designed to assist minority students in maximizing their college experience at the University of Richmond.
  • One-Card Services handles campus IDs, Spidercard, card access, meal plans, UR Stadium concessions, and vending.
  • The Pier is the entertainment area of Tyler's Grill, with a dance floor, lighting, professional-quality sound system, and video projection.
  • The Office of Student Activities, located on the second floor, engages in developing and fostering programs that enhance students' extracurricular life and provides information and numerous other services for students, faculty, staff and the community.
  • The Student Development Office houses the office of the Vice President for Student Development.
  • The Student Organization Leadership Center (Room #340) is a place where various student clubs and organzations can hold meetings, use a computer, and have access to lockers for storage of their organization's materials.  Informal meeting areas for the WCGA, RCSGA, and the Campus Activities Board (CAB) can be located in this space.  Student organizations who choose to have a mailbox in this area will have this service available to them.  If your student organization would like to have a mailbox, please contact Linda Pugh in the Student Activities office. 
  • Tyler's Grill provides a full range of fast food meals and a dining area called The Pier, which doubles as a performance and entertainment space.
  • Miscellaneous services in the Tyler Haynes Commons include US and campus mail drop boxes, self-service copying, lounges, babysitter and for-rent boards, and information about campus events.

Bicycles may pass through the building only if they are walked.

Animals are allowed to walk through the building. They are not allowed in the Food Service areas.


Tyler Haynes Commons Reservations and Facilities

The Tyler Haynes Commons provides meeting room space and audio-visual equipment is available on request. To reserve rooms/equipment, contact University Services Reservations at 804-289-8807.

We also have banquet accommodations. For assistance in planning your menu selection, contact the Catering Department at 804-484-1440.

Each meeting/conference room space is equipped with an LCD projector, screen, and VCR/DVD player.  Additional equipment is available.  Contact University Services Reservations, 804-289-8807.

The Pier can be reserved for performances/entertainment with a seating capacity of 225.

The Cellar, the campus pub, can also be reserved for receptions. Maximum capacity is 150. Reservations can be made by contacting the The Cellar management at 804-287-6820.
